Welcome to Our School
Welcome to the online home of Capitan Elementary School, where our ongoing community effort brings the best education possible for the children in our care. We are one of three schools in the Capitan Municipal Schools District in the Capitan Corridor of historic, rural Lincoln county in central New Mexico.
Though our community is small, we have a big heart. We hope you will enjoy browsing our website to find out what makes us special.
Our School
We know that your primary concern is the safety, well-being, and continued growth of your child. At Capitan Elementary, we understand your concern and work hard every day to ensure that every child reaches his or her fullest potential.
NM Common Core State Standards
Our curriculum is structured around the NM Common Core State Standards. This new approach to learning was developed by experts across the country to foster a deeper understanding of critical concepts and practical application of that knowledge.
Enriched Learning
Our students have access to learning opportunities in many areas throughout their educational time. During the week, they attend classes in visual arts, musical arts, computer skills, as well as physical education. Each class period is forty minutes long and supports learning in all academic content areas.
We believe it is important for our students to learn positive behavior and character traits as part of their education. We teach students lessons in expected behavior, as well as the importance of being respectful, responsible, fair, caring, trustworthy, and model citizens. We reward our students for their positive behavior with Tiger Bucks, positive office referrals, and ice cream parties.
Our student assistant team members, along with our math and reading intervention teachers, provide our students with extra support to make the academic gains in all areas. They also provide extensive small group instruction.
We support all learning with the use of technology throughout the school. Teachers use Promethean boards in the classrooms for instruction, and we assign each student a Chromebook for the educational year, so they have access to curriculum-based programs to support and connect the learning.
Prekindergarten
Capitan Elementary School is proud to announce we applied for and received an addition to our early childhood education program and will offer a three-year-old and four-year-old prekindergarten program this school year. This program will allow us to reach more children in our community to provide early childhood education. Research shows children’s brains develop faster in the first five years of life and supports our need for early childhood education in Lincoln County. We are committed to providing a high-quality, inclusive education in a classroom which supports and celebrates all learners and builds a strong foundation for our students as they begin a lifelong journey of learning. Our prekindergarten students will follow the daily schedule of all of our students as well as the district calendar for the school year.
